Do I Need to Start All Over Again?

Sometimes creating a more fulfilling life isn't about rebuilding everything. Sometimes it begins by changing just a few small pieces.
Last night I had a dream.

There was a Lego model that had already been built. It wasn't broken, and I had no desire to take it apart. I simply wanted to change two or three small pieces around the edges.
Oddly, before I could make those changes, I had to find somewhere to park.
The dream stayed with me after I woke. I found myself wondering what it was trying to tell me. Why only two or three small pieces? Why not simply take the whole thing apart and start again?
Then I began wondering whether we sometimes ask exactly the same question about our lives.
When things aren't quite as we'd hoped, it's easy to think we need a completely fresh start.
A new job.
A new home.
A new relationship.
Perhaps even a new version of ourselves.

But do we?
Maybe much of what we've already built is really rather good. It carries our history, our experience, our loves, our losses, and the person we've slowly been becoming all these years.
It could be that only a few small pieces no longer belong.
Many of us reach a point where we wonder how to find a new direction in life. We assume the answer must be to begin again.
What struck me most about the dream was that, before I could change anything, I had to find somewhere to park.
I first had to stop.
That feels true beyond the dream.
Life can become so busy that we rush from one obligation to the next, trying to solve problems while we're still in motion. We tell ourselves we need dramatic change, when perhaps what we really need is the space to see our lives more clearly.

A place to pause before deciding what comes next.
Only then do we notice the small changes that quietly alter everything.
Sometimes the most important transformations don't begin by pulling our lives apart.
Sometimes they begin by changing two or three pieces.
