A gentle exploration of tarot, astrology, dreams, and inner imagery for personal growth. This is part of an ongoing series exploring symbols and archetypes of the unconscious mind.
There was a time when the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung began to notice something curious.
People from very different cultures — separated by geography, language, and history — were dreaming similar dreams. They told stories, myths, filled with similar characters: the wise elder, the lost child, the dark adversary, the mysterious beloved. One very accessible work in which he and others explored this work is 'Man and His Symbols'.
From this, Jung developed his idea of archetypes — deep, shared patterns within the human psyche. Not learned, but inherited. Not fixed, but alive. These Jungian archetypes are patterns of force within the depths of our minds of which we normally have no conscious awareness. And yet this archetypal psychology has enormous power to affect our lives in almost every way.
And perhaps you’ve felt them too.
🌑 The Shadow — what we hide, and what we fear.

The Shadow holds the parts of ourselves we’ve pushed away — anger, fear, envy, but also untapped strength, creativity, and truth. Things about ourselves that are not easy to face and accept. It can be one of the most difficult archetypes to work with.
But when we gently turn towards it, rather than away, something begins to shift. We become more whole. Less reactive. More honest. We come to know and accept ourselves as the people we really are. Understanding our Shadow Self in relationships can have a major impact on all areas of our lives.
🌙 The Anima and Animus — the inner other.

These archetypes represent the inner feminine and masculine within us — not in a rigid sense, but as complementary energies. They are also the gatekeepers to the depths of our unconscious, potentially linking us to the universal unconscious, and its store of knowledge from ages past.
They especially shape how we relate to others in general, and whom and how we love. Awareness of anima or animus helps us understand how archetypes affect our relationships. When we become aware of them, our relationships often soften. We begin to see more clearly, both ourselves and those we care for.
🔮 The Wise One — the quiet voice of knowing

The Wise One appears as the guide, the mentor, the quiet inner voice that already knows.
It doesn’t shout.It waits.
Learning to listen to this part of yourself can open us to a depth of inherited wisdom that can enrich our lives; along with a sense of steadiness, especially when life feels uncertain.
🌱 The Child — openness, vulnerability, becoming

The Child carries wonder, sensitivity, and the capacity for joy; but also old wounds.
To reconnect with this archetype is not to become naïve, but to become able to fully appreciate life again. To rediscover what matters. To feel again, without losing strength. To laugh and cry, each at the right time.
✨ Working with these inner figures
Jung believed these archetypes speak to us in symbols — especially through dreams, imagination, and story. Enabling contact with them brings an influx of power and energy from within the hidden deeps of our minds. With this, our ability for positive growth and creation in our lives is enriched. With increased awareness of what previously moved us unconsciously to action, we become able to consciously direct our lives in the way we choose for them to develop.
There are many ways to begin. The techniques I use to enable my clients to find their way into these powerful life-energising elements of dream and myth include:
Noticing and analysing dreams, and the characters who appear within them
Reflective journalling, allowing images and feelings to unfold without judgement
Guided visualisation, entering into a gentle, symbolic inner landscape
Using tarot for self-reflection, discovering where archetypal images mirror our inner states and possibilities
Astrology, where planetary patterns reflect these same timeless energies in motion, helps us understand how astrology affects and helps our personal development and growth.
These are not about prediction, or being told what must happen.
They are about recognition.
A sense of:“Ah… that’s what I’ve been feeling.”“That’s the pattern I keep living.”“That’s the part of me asking to be seen.”
🌿 A quiet thought to carry with you
Within you are many voices, many figures, many stories.
Some familiar. Some forgotten. Some waiting patiently to be met.
And when you begin to listen to the voices which come from withinyou may find that your life does not need to be fixed so much as understood.
From that understanding, seeds of positive change begin to grow.
