Ghosts, Romance, and Everything Between

I suppose it was inevitable that my writing would drift towards the mysterious and the romantic — I’ve always had a soft spot for both. Even when I was younger, I loved stories that sent a little shiver down the spine: old houses with secrets, echoes from the past, mysterious letters, and the feeling that something unseen might be standing just behind you. At the same time, I’ve always been drawn to love stories — not just the happy-ever-after kind, but the deep, complex ones that explore longing, loss, and the strange ways people connect.

The Intertwining of Ghosts and Romance
Over time, those two threads — ghosts and romance — began to weave themselves together quite naturally in my writing. I’d start with an idea for a ghost story, and before long, there would be a love story hiding inside it. Or I’d begin a romantic tale, only to find a haunting presence drifting through the background. I think that’s part of what fascinates me about the supernatural: it’s never only about the ghost. It’s about the living people and what they bring to it — their grief, their guilt, and their yearning for connection.
The Power of Setting
I also find that setting plays a huge part in shaping my stories. I’m irresistibly drawn to atmospheric places — wild coastlines, ruined castles, and misty moors. There’s something about standing in a quiet place with centuries of history under your feet that makes the imagination spark. Sometimes all it takes is a creaking door or a half-glimpsed shadow in an old house to set a whole story in motion.
Ghosts as Reminders
I like to think that in my writing, the ghosts are never just there to frighten — they’re reminders of love, memory, and all the emotions that linger long after we think something is gone. The phrase "the past whispers" resonates deeply with me, as it encapsulates the essence of what I aim to convey through my stories.
Your Experiences with Ghosts and Romance
How about you? Do you enjoy a good ghost story — or a romance with a touch of mystery? Have you ever visited somewhere that gave you that delicious tingle down the spine, as if the past was whispering to you? I’d love to hear about the stories, films, or places that have stayed with you. Sometimes those are the real ghosts, aren’t they — the ones that live quietly in our minds.
The Journey of a Writer
Thanks for reading this part of *“A Life in Reading and Writing.” Every writer has their favourite themes — mine just happen to involve ghosts and romance! I’ll share more soon, and I’d love to hear what themes you return to in your own reading or writing
