Bank Holiday Reflection — Being Here, Just This

It should be my regular Sunday Reflection. But today, a Bank Holiday Monday reflection, since yesterday, as for many of us, was given over to the simple joy of family, food, and company.

This morning feels quieter.

I’ve been thinking about Vipassana meditation. That old Buddhist practice of simply observing: breath, body, sensation, thought. Not trying to change anything. Not striving. Just noticing what is here.

In the West, this has filtered through into what we now call mindfulness, shaped in part by people like Jon Kabat-Zinn, who brought these ideas into everyday life. Into hospitals, homes, and ordinary mornings like this one.

But the essence of it is much older, and much simpler.

There’s a kind of humour to it too.

I remember a Harry Enfield Television Programme sketch, where someone refuses to engage in conversation because they’re “smoking a fag.” Completely absorbed. Nothing else exists in that moment.

And in a strange way, that’s not so far from Zen.

Not the cigarette, perhaps. But the total presence.

As the old Zen saying goes: If you’ve eaten your meal, wash your dish.

Just this. Then this.

No layering. No escaping into the next thing before this one is finished.

In monasteries, I imagine this happens in silence, with great composure.

In my house… it looks a little different.

This morning’s meditation has involved a cup of tea, two dogs, sunlight, and an intermittent battle with the correct keyboard keys.

Not exactly serene.

And yet… perhaps it is.

Because mindfulness isn’t really about removing the mess of life. It’s about being present within it.

Drinking the tea.Stroking the dog.Missing the key.Trying again.

This moment — and this — and this.

So perhaps the question isn’t: Am I doing this well enough?

But simply: Am I here?

I’d love to hear how this shows up for you — in the ordinary moments of your day.
